Cause for Concern

Human impact in Morocco is severe. People used to live a semi-nomadic lifestyle here, moving from place to place several times during the year. But now they tend to settle in one place for long periods of time. During the winters, these people must gather large amounts of firewood for heating, and their livestock often graze the forest to get enough food to survive.  This has added to the depletion of some natural resources and land degradation/desertification.

Another problem caused from the increased population of people in one remote area is the contamination of the water supplies.  The water has become increasingly contaminated by raw sewage and oil polloution.  This has caused many health concerns for the people, animals and plants who utilize this water.

More Problems in Morocco:

  • The northern mountains of Morocco are geologically unstable and subject to earthquakes.  This has left the Moroccan people with an unstable sense of security; fearing that at any time an earthquake could occur on this land.
  • There are also periodic droughts throughout the northern mountains of Morocco.  This makes it hard for people to survive on this land year-round.
