When it comes to pronouncing -ed verbs, there are three different sounds.  Those sounds are: /t/, /d/, and /id/.  You can hear each of these sounds by clicking on the provided sound icon.

Now take a look at the list of words that I have provided.  The part of the word in red is the verb in the present tense.

baked     advised     arrested     collected    contacted    defended     allowed    brushed

cracked     crashed   appeared     arrived     believed    danced
dressed    dropped    escaped

finished     belonged    burned    called      demanded   painted    printed     rested

hated    wanted
hoped    hiked    joked     jumped      helped

Now click on the following sound icon to hear each of the words.  After you hear each word there will be a pause for you to say the word aloud to yourself.  Do this a couple of times.  As you are doing this, be listening to the sound that the -ed at the end of each word makes. Remember it can be the /t/, /d/, or /id/ sound.

All of the words from the list can be grouped by the end sound that the -ed makes.  Below are a few examples of each. Listen to each column and repeat the words.  Can you hear the difference?

/t/
/d/
/id/
fix      +      ed    =      fixed borrow   +   ed  =   borrowed need    +   ed    =     needed
cook  +      ed    =      cooked agree     +   ed  =   agreed count   +   ed    =     counted
ask    +      ed    =      asked answer   +   ed  =  answered provide +  ed    =    provided

Taking a look at the examples, do you notice anything about the end sound of the verb in the present tense?
Repeat the words from the larger list again if you need to.  Are there any patterns that you notice?

The next page will allow you to see (and hear) the list of words under the correct heading of /t/, /d/, or /id/.
