History of Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico was originally populated by the Taíno Indians a long time ago. Then Spain invaded the island and many Spanish moved there. The United States invaded Puerto Rico in 1989 and then in 1952 it became a Commonwealth of the U.S. This means it is much like a state with limited power. Puerto Ricans are considered United States citizens. Many Puerto Ricans travel back and forth between the U.S. and Puerto Rico for work or to see family/friends (Like Abuela does in the book!).
