History of Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico was originally populated by the
Taíno Indians
a long time ago.  Then Spain  invaded the island and many Spanish moved there.  The United States invaded Puerto Rico in 1989 and then in 1952 it became a Commonwealth of the U.S.  This means it is much like a state with limited power.  Puerto Ricans are considered United States citizens.  Many Puerto Ricans travel back and forth between the U.S. and Puerto Rico for work or to see family/friends (Like Abuela does in the book!).
