Save the Elephants

Threats

Elephants are being killed for their Ivory at a rate that most elephants will be extinct by 2020.

Elephant population in 1980 was about one million with arounf 700,000 elephants being killed a year. Now the population is less than 470,000.

It is eight percent higher than 7.4% rate which lead to the International Ivory Trade Ban in 1989.

Accordng to The International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red list African Elephants are a Vulnerable species and Asian Elephants are an Endangered species.

Dr. Samuel Wasser, a conservation biologist from the University of Washington

"If the trend countinues, there wnt be any elephants expect in fenced areas with a lot of enforcement to protect them."

The situation is worse than ever before the publix is unaware. It is very serious because elephants are an incredibly important species."

"They keep habitats open so other species that depend on such ecosystems can use them. Without elephants there will be major habita changes, with negative effects on many species that depend on the lost habitat."
