Common Ankle Injuries

 

 
 

Lateral Ankle Sprain:

Lateral Ankle Sprain is the most common type of ankle sprain in dancers. The lateral structures of the ankle get hurt when the ankle is rolled outwards. This is caused either by improperly landing jumps or landing on another dancers foot or landing on something else. When this occurs you will most likely hear a "pop" sound which will then lead to swelling. The severity of the symptoms will vary due to the severity of the sprain.

Anterior Impingment Syndrome:

Anterior Impingment Syndrome is when the top of the abnkle when the shin bone meets the ankle. This is caused from doing plies over and over again. when this happens the bony formaion compresses the soft tissue creating pain, swelling at the fron of the ankle joint.
 

Achilles Tendinitis:

Achilles Tendinitis most commonly occurs in he bodies longer tendon-Achilles Tendon. It is also the most frequently ruptured tendon in dancers. This is due to over training of the dancer, heavy training of the dancer in a short amount of time. returning to dancer after a long period of rest, natural flexibility in the calf muscle, or dancing on a non-sprung floor.
